Old Weapons

2006/2007 > Cuairteoirí > Michael Moylan

A man called Mike, from Kilkenny, came to our school to show us old weapons.

The first weapon he showed us was a sword. One sword was in the shape of a circle. The other swords had pointed blades. The pockets of the swords were made from leather. They were brown.

He showed us a horn. You have to spit into it to make a sound. It makes a very loud noise. Long ago, it was used to warn that a ship was coming in to land.

Then he showed us a bow and arrow. It was used to kill people and animals. The bow was made from string and stick. The arrow was made from stick with a sharp point on it. Robin Hood used one when he was hunting.

He showed us a gun. I think it was a rifle. It was black. It had two barrels.

He showed us another weapon. It was very heavy. It had a ball on top of a stick. There were two types. One had a chain; the other had a stick joined to the ball.

He showed us Armour. People wore it to protect themselves. It’s made from steel and it’s very heavy to wear. They also had shields in their hands.
